Editorial Reviews

Malevolent Creation are back to blast and grind their way back into the extreme metal game. They've influenced countless younger bands since their inception in 1987 and they show no signs of slowing down on their eleventh studio album. These death metal veterans have honed their skills to brutal perfection. It's no wonder why bands like Slipknot have cited this band as a major influence over the years. As mastermind Phil Fasciana sums it up, "If you're too slow, you've got to go." The band are notorious as ever, never allowing the revolving door of musicians to affect the power and skill of the music they're known for.

Malevolent Creation needed a decent album. This is it. Classic Florida Death Metal played with fire, and mixed well to boot. Remember Warkult with the over compressed?limited everything, and DoomsdayX lame mix? This album fixes all that.

Malevolent Creation is a band that has endured countless line-up changes. The one member on every album, Phil Fasciana has an admirable work ethic...even if the results are sub-par. They are an underrated and unfortunately overlooked death metal band of the early 90s from original hotbed of death metal: the Sunshine State of Florida. The 2000s have not yet been a good decade for the band. The last effort, `Doomsday X' started out promising, but was mired by poorly written songs performed with about as much zest as a non-alcoholic beer. The production was not very good for that album either. The prior efforts with Kyle Simmons were pretty lackluster as well. The last great Malevolent Creation between 1998 and now is the 2000 effort `Envenomed'. When singer Brett Hoffman touted that on this new album "[we're] going to push ourselves to limit, playing faster and heavy than ever before", I kind of doubted him. Happily, I turned out to be very wrong.

`Invidious Dominion' is about as subtle as a 350lbs man drop kicking you in the chest. This effort finds the band in a more stripped down format. Gone are the songs that drag on forever with some boring solo and some equally boring blast-beats thrown in intermittently. The songs have simple, catchy and effective riffs. The opener `United Hatred' showcases the talent the band has to offer -which is a lot! The song blasts past you with such a ferocity it challenges the numbers on `Envenomed'. Hell, even the songs on `Retribution' and `Ten Commandments' are put on the mantle with this flawless number. The song has the elements that make `Dominion' such a treat: great riffs, tons of groove, shorter songs. `Slaughter House' has the same kind of head banging groove to it that `Coronation of Our Domain' has.

`Invidious Dominion' is remarkable in that it barely makes it past the 36 minute mark. The amazing thing is the album is neither too short, nor does it ever feel too long. Some tracks stand out more than others but the amazing thing is how this album is a great album start to finish without that lull that most albums go through in the middle or toward the end.

Singer Brett Hoffmann has never sounded so tortured or possessed as he does on `Dominion'. His range of voice and ability has changed little -if at all. Hoffmann was one of the few singers back in the early 90s to buck the trend of death/grind singers having incomprehensible, dull, throaty vocals. Every rasp, every groan and every line is intelligible here and Hoffman is a real treat because he adds a dimension to the band that few death metal singers do. `Doomsday X' put his vocals too far in the background. Erik Rutan, the recording engineer and producer, must have heard the complaints about that and fixed it.

The production is top notch. The guitars are very clear and not muddy at all. The drums are bass heavy with the cymbals occupying the high range in a crystal clear way so every crash or china accent is distinguished. Gus Rios (ex-Resurrection) was a wise choice for a drummer and his distinct style works well with Malevolent Creation. Few albums I've listened to several times from beginning to end in the same day I've got them. This album would be one of the few. It is an impressive album.

As usual, a heavy, heavy release from Malevolent Creation. Phil's riffs sound like trademark Malevolent, and the tracks he wrote, United Hate, Slaughter House, Lead Spitter, Target Rich Environment, Antagonized, and Born Again Hard, are easily my favorites on the album. The others are good songs, but I think Fasciana's stand out. With one exception, though; the title track was written by the drummer, and it's a crusher. This CD has grown on me from the first few listens, as I first thought it deserved four stars. But each song on the album is distinct and memorable, and the brutality of this band is unmatched. Plus, Brett's vocals sound vicious as he turns in an impressive performance. In my opinion, you definitely have to have some Malevolent Creation if you're a fan of traditional, breakneck death metal.

solid performance from one of the genre's pioneers . it's not reinventing the wheel ..but it's true old school death metal with a good production and relentless energy
