Yes, there were a few characters who were cheesy stereotypical caricatures, but overall, I loved the screenplay and the acting.
There were definitely a few moments that, by 80s standards, were probably seen as funny or heroic, whereas today I thought "Wow, that was kinda insensitive," or "Did he really need to punch the guy? What an overreaction!" I get it - it was a different time - crime was really bad, and people loved vigilante justice and the satisfaction of putting a jerk in his place. As a child, I had no problem with the whole "grab a woman's crotch to see if she's really female" thing in the movie, though as a grown woman now, my reaction is "Excuse me! If a total stranger walked up and grabbed me in that manner, I would break his fingers!"
But, despite these weird don't-translate-quite-so-well-30-years-later moments, it was still a fun movie. I'd recommend it for date night, or really any other night. But maybe don't watch it with your kids if you're uncomfortable explaining cocaine, prostitutes, and transgender people. You might want to put them to bed first ;-)
