Dimmu Borgir's third album, "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant," was their first album to feature keyboards. And while this record was coincidently the group's breakthrough, it also brought on legions of haters who claimed Dimmu "sold out." But the truth about "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" is that it's a great black metal album (one of the genre's high points), and also one of Dimmu's most creative releases. The use of Stian's keyboards don't detract from the songs' heaviness, but it does add more depth and atmosphere to the music, making the songs sound fuller and richer. Plus, the use of (what sounds like) a choir, orchestra, and violins adds some extra ear candy and helps a couple of the songs to be quite pretty. But, that's not to give you the wrong impression, because the guitars and drums are still brutal. So, the final result is an album which is quite heavy but also pretty. There are some songs (like the fiery "Mourning Palace") that are just brutal, but most of these songs mix melody with metal. For example, see "In Death's Embrace," which augments piano keys with rapid-fire riffs, and "Entrance" and "A Succubus In Rapture," which are backed by both creepy, chilling piano keys and scorching buzzsaw riffs. Also, the bonus track ("Raabjorn Speiler Draugheimens Skodde") begins with some choir singing and melodic, almost aquatic instruments before launching into a blistering barrage of power chords and stomping drums. The last two highlights are "The Night Masquerade" and "Master Of Disharmony." Both of these songs could have been lifted from a 1349 or Dark Funeral demo, because they both feature walls of searing guitars, jackhammer drums, and high-pitched, skin crawling shrieks.
If you're looking for melody-deficient black metal, pick up some Mayhem or one of Dimmu's first discs. But if you want a true symphonic black metal album which successfully incorporates beautiful parts with brutal ones, start here.

So, here it is, a childhood memory, an album I listened to so much all those years ago. But where did it go? I don't know, but somehow I lost it, and then Dimmu started releasing albums that I really didn't care for.
And then it happened; One day, browsing amazon and this gem showed up. I thought to myself "oh, I haven't listened to this for years. I gotta see if it still holds up". The answer is yes. It most certainly does. There are so many classic songs on this album, and as I started listing songs I pretty much named them all, so here's the tracklist:
1. "Mourning Palace"
2. "Spellbound (By the Devil)"
3. "In Death's Embrace"
4. "Relinquishment of Spirit and Flesh"
5. "The Night Masquerade"
6. "Tormentor of Christian Souls"
7. "Entrance"
8. "Master of Disharmony"
9. "Prudence's Fall"
10. "A Succubus in Rapture"
11. "Raabjørn Speiler Draugheimens Skodde"
There are almost no bad tracks on this album, it's quite frankly a masterpiece in the modern black metal-era.

This is Dimmu Borgir at its best I think...I don't think the band has been able to top this album, which in 2019 is 22 years old. It's just as awesome as it was back in the 90s. Powerful and melodic with everything one expects from a good Norwegian black metal album- powerful songs, your standard mid tempo rhythms, melodic lines that are actually meditative and relaxing in a weird way, harsh raspy vocals. Together, it's an experience. If however you're afraid of Satan, devils, succubi, and various other aspects of the netherworld, you might not appreciate this (and probably ought to avoid black metal altogether...) but for fans of the genre, this is classic gold.

It's a very dark and melodic album. I listen to it before I go to bed every night. It portrays the Devil in a way if Christians heard it they'll be scared of say turn that devil music down! Succubus In Rapture and Raabjørn speiler draugheimens skodde are most melodic songs on the album and they make you relax and feel the magic of the satanic way of life. I absolutely love the vocals and guitars, it sounds perfect. This album is just F****** awesome and it's a must have for your Black Metal collection.3

This review is more for those who have never listened to this album rather than long-time Dimmu fans. Dimmu fans rave about this album for a reason. This is not only a black metal masterpiece in its own right, but one of the best metal albums ever created. Heavy, brooding, dark, and haunting are only a few adjectives that can be used to describe this album. This is THE album that brought black metal to the masses and probably (arguably) propelled Dimmu to their current stature amongst the giants of metal. I think this album is a great buy for someone trying to discover black metal and a no-brainer for someone who is already a black metal fan. This is a must-own, black metal masterpiece!
